HrefnaA Handverk

I'm Hrefna Aradóttir and I've been carving wood for over twenty years. My main material has been the Alaska Willow, though in between creeps the odd driftwood, old furniture legs and various other things that the knife bites.

The Santas
It all started with the Santas.
1998 was the first time I made them and ever since then I have carved Santas, most of these narrow with the ribbon to hang on a Christmas tree, for example, or use for other decorations. Then the Santas 'grew' and now I also make them in statue form, where no one is the same because I let the branch speak. Some bends and branches become a hat or nose. They are as different as they are many, there is always a similarity with them but each one is completely unique. Since then, there have also been larger Santas to hang on the wall, they are usually made of driftwood, unused fence posts, or just some leftover wood that I can find. I have also recycled legs from furniture, sofas and chairs, and cut Santa faces into them and put candle holders on top.
To add to the variety, I have also made various designs with painted Santas; on clothespins, made labels for packages, decorated matchsticks and more. The Santas have always been my main art.
Special orders
I have often carved occasion statues as special orders. They are mainly the confirmation statues, although in between a bride and a groom or whole families sneak in. The statues are all made from precise images of the subject to capture every detail. The statues are also always faceless.
